Aki matsuri: fall Japanese festivals in North America
What fall matsuri are like, how they differ from Obon and sakura season, and how to find September and October events.
Updated July 4, 2026
Aki matsuri means fall festival. In North America, fall Japanese cultural events are less standardized than summer Obon or spring sakura festivals. That variety is part of the appeal: food halls, garden evenings, campus programs, sister-city events, martial arts demonstrations, and large regional festivals all land in the fall window.
What makes fall different
Summer Obon is anchored by temples and Bon Odori. Spring sakura events are anchored by blossoms. Fall is more flexible. Organizers often build around culture, food, performance, harvest themes, or Japan Week programming.
That means a fall listing might be a one-day street festival, a weekend convention-style cultural showcase, a moon-viewing evening at a Japanese garden, or a smaller fundraiser at a community center.
When the season runs
Most fall events appear from September through November. September is strong for large regional festivals and campus events. October often brings garden programs, food festivals, and culture weeks. Some events are annual, but many announce dates only a few months ahead.
If you are searching in summer and a familiar fall event is missing, it may simply not be announced yet.
What to expect
Fall matsuri tend to be practical and program-heavy. Look for taiko, dance, martial arts, tea, calligraphy, food vendors, craft markets, and cultural booths. Some events focus on one tradition. Others gather many groups under one schedule.
Check whether the event is indoors or outdoors. Fall weather can change quickly, and garden events may have separate ticketing or timed entry.
Planning tips
- Open the organizer link before you travel.
- Check the schedule for stage times, workshops, and ticketed sessions.
- Bring cash for smaller food booths and fundraisers.
- If the event is on a campus or in a downtown district, check parking and transit first.
Find fall events
Use the calendar for September and October, browse matsuri listings, or use the map to see what is near you. Each listing shows its confirmation state and links back to the organizer.
